Otoplasty is a procedure that makes the ears less prominent, so that they do not stick out too far. The degree of prominence of the ear varies significantly from person to person from slightly prominent that may impact choice of haristyle, to very prominent that is obvious to the casual observer.
The goal of otoplasty is to produce a natural appearing ear that is set back sufficiently but not excessively with no visible scar. The procedure is usually made through an incision in the crease of the ear. The ear cartilage is folded using sutures and cartilage is removed as needed.
Ear reduction can also be performed with otoplasty and in this procedure the incisions are hidden within the anterior crease under the overhang of the ear where it is not visible.
A soft bulky dressing is worn for several days after surgery and after that no dressing is required. A head band is recommended to wear at night time for 1 month after surgery.
