Reduction

Reduction

Reduction mammoplasty, more commonly known as breast reduction, reduces the size and weight of your breast by removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin.  Many patients with heavy, voluminous breasts experience physical pain and discomfort along with emotional discomfort. Many women find physical activity to be hindered due to the excess breast weight.  With breast reduction surgery we can restore posture and significantly improve pain caused by the excess weight of your breasts.

Breast reductions require incisions on the breast that result in visible scars. Scars tend to fade very nicely on the breast over the course of time but they are permanent. Nipple sensation can change with breast reduction becoming less or more sensitive.

Breast cancer will affect 1 in 8 women over their lifetime. Breast reduction actually decreases the risk of developing breast cancer. In women that are above the age of 50, or who have a strong family history of breast cancer mammograms should be up to date before your breast reduction surgery.

Every woman has some asymmetry between the breasts. With surgery the goal is to maintain or improve symmetry, however differences between the breasts will still exist after surgery. To measure asymmetry in the volume of your breasts we have published a technique using Archimedes principle of water displacement that you can perform to help predetermine the volume difference between your breasts. Taking out the guess work leads to more consistent and predictable results.

Liposuction is often used to refine the chest wall contour, improve the shape of the breast, and can help limit incisions (and scars). Liposuction will not improve your symptoms but it does provide a beautiful aesthetic result if you are a candidate.

Our patient’s safety is our number one priority. In order to greatly improve your chance for a beautiful result, and limit the chance of complications, we will have certain weight goals based on your height that science has proven to greatly increase the safety of your breast reduction surgery, limit your complications and improve your result.
